If there is one thing in the world which is universally hated and yet seemingly necessary it is tax. There are few things worse than working your hardest for a whole month only to get your paycheque at the end and realise that a big portion of it has gone to tax.
It can be very frustrating, especially if you work on commission, because you work for that commission but all it ends up doing is settling the tax you have to pay. In countries like the UK where health care and education are substantially subsidised it is easier to see where your hard earned money goes. This feeling certainly does not last all the time, and often we only remember the social benefits we pay for when we need to go to the hospital.
But the tax that you pay also goes to maintaining national and regional roads; it contributes to the salaries of people who keep our cities clean. Paying tax certainly doesn't put a smile on your face.
But it does mean that when you need health care or your rubbish removed it might actually happen. Tax is an important part of our civil duty.
